Car registration fee cut by half again

A government decree has cut registration fees for locally made cars by 50 percent for six months starting December 1. -

This is the second time in the last two years such a cut is being made to mitigate the difficulties faced by the auto industry due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last year, car sales had fallen by 8 percent to 296,634 units as the Covid-19 pandemic badly affected the economy, hitting people’s incomes and discretionary spending.

Decision issued on developing national print, electronic newspapers for foreign service

NDO/VNA – Three printed and electronic newspapers of the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) will be developed into national newspapers for foreign service in the 2022-2030 period, under a new decision of the Prime Minister.

The three newspapers named under Decision 1976/QD-TTg are the English-language daily Viet Nam News, the multi-language magazine Vietnam Pictorial and the multi-language electronic newspaper VietnamPlus, all run by the State-own VNA.

The decision also mentions the promotion of the use of modern journalism technology and multi-media, along with international cooperation in information and personnel training, in the development of the newspapers.

Fourth worker dies after Covid vaccination

A worker at a shoe factory in Thanh Hoa has died after receiving the Vero Cell Covid-19 vaccine, the fourth such fatality since Wednesday, the provincial health department said. -

The 36-year-old woman was among 400 workers vaccinated against Covid-19 with the Vero Cell vaccine at the Kim Viet Shoe Company in Nong Cong District in the north central province on Tuesday. Dozens of people later exhibited side effects, with around 17 taken to hospitals.

Thanh Hoa has recorded over 2,000 Covid-19 cases in the fourth coronavirus wave, with 12 dead. Over 2.3 million Covid-19 vaccine shots have been given in the province.

Cold storage is more attractive during the pandemic

German military prepares to transfer COVID patients as infections hit new record

Germany on Friday reported a new record of more than 76,000 COVID-19 infections in a day as its air force got ready for the first time in the pandemic to fly severely ill patients to other parts of the country to unburden struggling hospitals.

Vietnam’s e-commerce traffic higher than Thailand, Malaysia

E-commerce web traffic from Vietnam is double that of Thailand and triple that of Malaysia in Q3, showing high demand for online shopping amid the pandemic, a report has found. -

Digital consumption has become a new habit as the number of online vendors increases, with Vietnam becoming "a star" on the Southeast Asian e-commerce market, according to the Q3 market report by iPrice Group.

The iPrice report also pointed out Vietnamese consumers interact on the social media pages of e-commerce platforms more frequently than Thai but less than Malaysians, showing the importance of Facebook in promoting brands in Vietnam.

COVID-19 cases, deaths on the rise in HCM City

HCM CITY — The HCM City Department of Health has released new guidance for home-based care of patients with mild or moderate COVID-19 symptoms amid a surge in new COVID-19 cases, hospitalisations and deaths in the past week.

The number of new cases in the city steadily increased over the past weeks, reaching 1,666 cases on Wednesday.

Vietnam Airlines aims to win largest share on direct Việt Nam-US route

HÀ NỘI — Vietnam Airlines, the country's national flag carrier, looks to dominate the Việt Nam-US route as preparations have been completed for its first direct flight to the US, which is scheduled to take off on Sunday, said Lê Hồng Hà, director-general of Vietnam Airlines.

The Việt Nam-US route was among one of the most in-demand pre-pandemic. There were 24,000 Vietnamese university students and a 2.2 million strong Vietnamese diaspora in the US in 2020. Two-way trade has been on the rise in recent years reaching US$90 billion in 2020 and projected to hit over $100 billion this year, making the South East Asian economy one of the US’ top trading partners.

The first direct flight to the US by Vietnam Airlines using a wide-body Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will take off on the evening of November 28 from HCM City to San Francisco and arrive in 13 hours and 50 minutes. The return flight will take off on November 29 from San Francisco and arrive in Việt Nam on December 1, 16 hours and 40 minutes later. — VNS

Increase domestic flights in major cities, Vietnam aviation authority proposes

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has proposed increasing flight frequency between Hanoi, HCMC and Da Nang from next month, before pre-pandemic levels are resumed early next year. -

In a proposal sent Thursday to the Ministry of Transport, the CAAV said the increase would meet higher travel demand during the year-end peak season.

But those high-risk or locked-down areas and HCMC and Can Tho need to furnish a negative coronavirus test before boarding, even if they have been fully vaccinated or have recovered from Covid-19.

AFF U23 Championship 2022 slated for February

The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) has announced that the AFF U23 Championship 2022 will take place in Cambodia next year.

It is to help the squads better prepare for the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) slated for May, 2022. The event has been postponed due to complicated developments of the COVID-19 pandemic. SEA Games 31 and the 11th ASEAN Para Games were originally scheduled to take place from November 21 to December 2 this year.

Nha Trang seeks to turn pristine island into tourist hub

Nha Trang, a popular tourist town in Vietnam's central coast, plans to turn Hon Tre Island into a tourism center, resort and entertainment complex to lure more visitors. -

Vietnamese women entrepreneurs awarded prizes for planning for success

HCMC considers $38 mln Tet support for pandemic affected citizens

The HCMC labor department has proposed a VND870 billion ($38.3 million) Lunar New Year support package for those who've been badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. -

Le Minh Tan, director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, said Thursday that the proposed support package was VND58 billion more than the one provided for the previous Tet because subsequent impacts of the pandemic have pushed many households back into poverty.

Over 1,100 war invalids and those who have contributed to wartime efforts, among others, will also benefit from the package, receiving presents worth VND1.7 million or VND3.1 million each, depending on individual cases.

HCMC industrial parks await guidance to operate Covid-19 facilities

Without operating regulations, facilities to quarantine and treat Covid-19 patients are idling in HCMC’s industrial parks even as several facilities in the city are overloaded. -

After two months of preparation, the Linh Trung 2 Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Thu Duc City opened on October 12 its facility for quarantining and treating Covid-19 patients with mild symptoms.

A spokesperson for Pouyuen Vietnam in Binh Tan District said infections have been detected at the factory after workers began to return, and many of them wish to go to quarantine facilities since their living quarters are unsafe for isolation.

Hung Yen collaborates with Japanese firm in expanding industrial park

NDO/VNA – The northern province of Hung Yen will cooperate with Japan's Sumitomo Corporation in the implementation of the third phase of Thang Long Industrial Park II expansion project under a memorandum of understanding exchanged on November 25 within the framework of the official visit to Japan by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Thang Long II Industrial Park has a favourable geographical position as it is only about 30km from Hanoi, 70km from Hai Phong port and about 110km from Quang Ninh deep water port.

Conference seeks to unleash potential of old photo archives at Vietnamese institute

The Institute of Social Sciences Information (ISSI) under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) on November 25 held an international scientific conference to seek ways to unlock potential of the photo archives of the French School of the Far East (EFEO) at ISSI.

ISSI Deputy Director Assoc. Prof., Dr. Le Hai Dang said the big collection of EFEO photos archived at ISSI has become a valuable heritage for researchers in studying national culture and provided evidence for the restoration of cultural and historic relics damaged by wars or natural disasters.

The French School was established in Vietnam in 1900 in Sai Gon (HCM City today). It was closed in 1959 and re-opened in Hanoi in 1993. It mainly focuses on history, archaeology and philology, as well as the study of modern Asian societies./.

Thailand suggests potential field for Asia-Europe cooperation

NDO/VNA - Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has emphasised that the 13th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit (ASEM 13) was a good opportunity for European and Asian leaders to have dialogue in order to find common solutions to current global issues like COVID-19 and climate change.

According to Thai Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, Prayut said at the ASEM 13’s second plenary session on November 26 that such global issues continue to affirm the need for strengthening multilateralism for shared growth, as no country can solve these challenges on its own.

Thailand, one of the founding members of ASEM, was the host country of the first ASEM Summit in 1996.

New project supports exports of quality black pepper to the EU

HÀ NỘI — The Plant Protection Department (PPD) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA) and the IDH Stitching Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) on Thursday introduced a programme supporting exports of quality black pepper from Việt Nam to the EU.

The “Scaling sustainable production and trade of Vietnamese pepper” project, co-financed by the European Union (EU) and IDH, is under the framework of the ARISE Plus initiative aimed at supporting the Vietnamese Government to benefit from bilateral trade agreements and promote the export of high-quality products and services from Việt Nam to the EU.

“Our objective is to improve the lives of 10,000 pepper smallholder farmers in the Central Highlands and increase the productivity of pepper processors. Việt Nam provides almost half of European pepper for consumption. It is only natural that the EU and its member states invest heavily in the pepper supply chain for a stronger Europe-PPD’s deputy director partnership,” Penot said. — VNS

COVID-19 cases spike to new high in Cần Thơ City

HCM CITY — The Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta city of Cần Thơ on Thursday saw its highest single day incidence of COVID-19, 1,310 cases, and six related deaths, according to its Department of Health.

Field hospitals in the city are now operating at full capacity, prompting more patients to opt for isolation and treatment at home. More than 5,600 are being treated at home.

More than 97 per cent of the Bạc Liêu population received at least one shot and 65.7 per cent have been fully vaccinated.

Deputy PM calls for early finalisation of Mekong Delta development plan

Remittance to Vietnam forecast to continue growing despite pandemic

NDO/VNA – The World Bank and the Global Knowledge Partnership on Migration and Development (KNOMAD) forecast that remittance to Vietnam is estimated at 18.1 billion USD in 2021.

As such, the country will be the eighth largest remittance recipient in the world and the third largest in the Asia-Pacific region this year.

According to estimates from the World Bank’s Migration and Development Brief released recently, remittances to low- and middle-income countries are projected to have grown a strong 7.3 percent to reach 589 billion USD in 2021. Vaccine deaths attributed to severe allergic reactions

THANH HÓA — Three people who died after taking the Vero Cell COVID-19 vaccine earlier this week had suffered an adverse allergic reaction, health officials have ruled.

The three people who lost their lives all worked at a shoe company in central Thanh Hóa Province. The cause of death in all cases has been confirmed as anaphylaxis - a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

The Ministry of Health aims to finish administering 150 million doses of vaccine (costing around US$1.1 billion) for 75 million people, or 75 per cent of the population by April 2022 to achieve herd immunity. — VNS

HÀ NỘI — Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Đỗ Thắng Hải had an online meeting with Panamanian Deputy Minister of Commerce and Industry Juan Carlos Sosa on Wednesday to discuss ways for bolstering bilateral trade and investment.

Hai noted with satisfaction that trade between the two countries grew strongly in the first 10 months of 2021, by 21 per cent year on year, to US$337.26 million. Of the figure, Việt Nam’s exports to Panama reached $336.23 million, rising 24.35 per cent.

IUU fishing fight regulations popularised among fishermen in Bach Long Vi island

Coast guards and border guards in the northern port city of Hai Phong on November 23 held a communication event to popularise regulations on the prevention and combat of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing among fishermen in Bach Long Vi island.

Currently, more than 300 fishing boats, mostly from central localities, are docking in Hai Phong to avoid bad weather.

Fintech start-up GIMO secures US$1.9 million in funding

HÀ NỘI — GIMO, Việt Nam's fintech startup offering on-demand pay for blue-collar workers, announced on November 23 it has successfully raised US$1.9 million in a post-seed round of funding.

Led by Singapore’s Integra Partners, the round also had participation from Resolution Ventures, Blauwpark Partners, and TNB Aura VN Scout.

65 percent of rural population expected to access clean water by 2030

NDO – About 65 percent of the rural population in Vietnam is anticipated to get access to clean water of certified standards with a minimum quantity of 60 litres per person per day by 2030.

The information was announced at the National strategy for rural water supply and sanitation by 2030, with a vision towards 2045, which was recently signed by Deputy Prime Minister Le Văn Thanh.

Vietnam’s Covid-19 infections hit two-month high

Despite rising infections, the number of critical cases and deaths dropped after nearly two months of reopening the economy.

Vietnam saw 12,450 coronavirus cases on November 25, the highest single day figure reported in two months and a half, as a result of the flexible adaptation approach since October 2021.

Speaking at a national meeting today [November 25], Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Truong Son said with the current pandemic situation, the criterion of evaluating 100,000 new Covid-19 cases a week is no longer important. The current method is to focus on assessing the rate of serious patients, hospitalization, death, and treatment capacity.

Shrimp farming gradually recovers in the Mekong Delta, exports remain robust

HCM CITY – Despite the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, shrimp exports have remained strong this year, also causing local retail prices to rise in the Mekong Delta.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in the first 10 months shrimp exports rose by 2.6 per cent to US$3.2 billion, with shipments to the US rising sharply.

Exports by delta provinces will remain high due to the many sales contracts businesses there have signed, but rising transport costs and potential COVID-related complications remain major challenges, according to many provinces.
