Quang Nam to welcome tourists starting from late October

NDO – Many tourist attractions in the central province of Quang Nam are expected to reopen to the public from late October, after months of social distancing to prevent and control COVID-19 pandemic.

Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee held an online conference with relevant localities and units to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as discuss measures to welcome domestic and international visitors.

Many enterprises asked the functional agencies to create the most favourable conditions to stimulate the travel demand of visitors, with a focus on reducing unnecessary administrative procedures and requirements as well as integrating data on a platform.

Cambodia allows reopening of all schools

The Cambodian Ministry of Education has announced the reopening of public and private schools nationwide from November 1 with a request on strict adherence to COVID-19 measures set by the Ministry of Health to prevent infections in classrooms, reported the local newspaper Khmer Times.

The ministry added that each classroom must allow only 15 to 20 students to study at a time to maintain distancing, and regular hand wash and mask wearing are required, with the sale of food inside schools prohibited.

Cambodia on October 22 confirmed 148 new cases of COVID-19, including 126 detected in the community, in the past 24 hours./.

By October 21, the country had injected over 70.48 million doses of vaccines to date, with more than 20.15 million people now fully inoculated.

HCMC bus stations remain deserted as many provinces have yet to resume routes to the city due to different Covid-19 safety regulations. -

Few passengers were seen at Mien Dong Bus Station in Binh Thanh District on Thursday when it resumed 13 routes with 40 trips to southern and central provinces.

In Level 3 areas (high risks), buses can operate at 50 percent capacity, while in Level 4 areas (very high risks), passengers who are not vaccinated are required to test Covid-negative.

Dang Thai Son’s student wins int’l Chopin piano competition

Canadian pianist Bruce Xiaoyu Li, student of renowned Vietnamese pianist Dang Thai Son, has won first prize at the 18th Chopin piano competition in Warsaw, Poland, which is considered the world's most prestigious music awards.

This year’s competition, held from October 2-23, drew 87 pianists from 18 nations across the globe. Broadcast live on YouTube and via a bespoke mobile app, the contest attracted record online interest. Some 70,000 people watched the result streamed online.

Son, who himself was the first Asian to win first prize and the gold medal at the same competition in 1980, expressed his pride on his students' achievements on Facebook. The Vietnamese pianist is now teaching at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in the US./.

Ministry asks localities to increase inter-provincial passenger transport

HÀ NỘI — The Ministry of Transport has issued a document asking People’s Committees of cities and provinces to coordinate on the implementation of temporary guidelines on transport activities.

The measures are to ensure safe and flexible adaptation to and effective control of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a report reviewing passenger transport activities on fixed routes during one week of resumption from October 13-18, the ministry said authorities of 48 provinces and cities had allowed the resumption of inter-provincial routes, while in 15 other localities, the transport departments had submitted plans to resume routes to the municipal/provincial authorities. — VNS

Mekong Delta Province maintains factory restrictions over ‘high risks’: officials

Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang is still imposing the stay-at-work model because of high Covid-outbreak risks driven by low vaccination, an official said. -

With only around 45 percent of workers vaccinated, the province cannot risk spreading infection with many returning from other provinces, said Nguyen Nhat Truong, head of Tien Giang Industrial Hub Management Committee, at a press briefing Thursday.

On the government’s Covid-19 scale, the province currently puts itself at Level 2 out of 4, or at average risk.

Efforts made to rescue a stranded cargo ship in Quang Tri

NDO – Functional forces are deploying a number of measures to rescue a 28,000-DWT cargo ship that ran aground in the waters of South Cua Viet, in the central province of Quang Tri, said the Maritime Administration of Quang Tri province on October 22.

Accordingly, rescue forces have mobilised 4 ships, including 2 tugs with a capacity of 5600 HP and 2 other ships to respond to oil spills, with more than 40 people participating in the rescue.

After the incident, Glory Future signed a rescue contract with the Tan Cang Sai Gon (Saigon New Port) Corporation and the National Oil Spill Response Centre in the Central region.

Thailand to loosen COVID-19 restrictions for foreigners

NDO/VNA – Several ministries have been asked to facilitate Vietnamese people and foreigners’ exit from and entry into the country.

In a document issued by the Government Office conveying the request made by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, the Ministry of Health was told to promptly overhaul the existing guidelines or issue new ones on testing, quarantine, and health monitoring to create favourable conditions for Vietnamese people to return to the homeland, and for foreign entrepreneurs, experts, and hi-tech workers to enter the country safely.

The Deputy PM also requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to work with the Ministries of Public Security; Health; Culture, Sports and Tourism; Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs; and relevant ministries and sectors to soon reach consensus on regulations related to visa and epidemiological control for foreigners entering Vietnam in the new context.

Sapa Airport construction to cost VND7 trillion under PPP contract

NDO – The construction of Sapa Airport in the northern province of Lao Cai is to be implemented under public-private partnership at a cost of nearly VND7 trillion (US$307.6 million).

Under a decision signed by Deputy PM Le Van Thanh, construction of the airport will be divided into two phases, with the first estimated to cost VND4.2 (US$184.6 million).

Singapore rolls out 640 million support package for businesses

Singapore will be rolling out a 640 million SGD (476.5 million USD) support package for businesses affected by extended COVID-19 restrictions in the city-state.

Businesses eligible for the support include F&B;, retail, cinemas, museums and art galleries, family entertainment, tourism, gyms and fitness studios, and performing arts and arts education.

In addition, the COVID-19 Driver Relief Fund will be expanded to support taxi and private hire car drivers. They will receive payments of 10 SGD per vehicle a day in November and 5 SGD per vehicle a day in December. An estimated 50,000 drivers will benefit from the support. Global economic recovery after COVID-19 pandemic remains precarious

Thua Thien - Hue to host Vietnam Film Festival 2021

Fruit prices from Mekong Delta rise

HCM CITY — Jackfruits, longans and limes from Mekong Delta provinces now can fetch prices two to four times higher compared to months ago when travel restrictions between places were enforced.

Limes are now selling at VNĐ7,000 to 8,000 per kilo at the garden, while the lowest price was only VNĐ2,000 per kilo earlier when sales were slow.

HÀ NỘI — Revenue of the whole non-life insurance market recorded modest growth this year, but most insurance stocks on the stock market rose sharply.

In the past two months, most insurance stocks have rebounded, with some stocks like Military Insurance Company (MIG), Bảo Minh Insurance Corporation (BMI) and Post - Telecommunication Joint Stock Insurance Corporation (PTI) up about 60 per cent compared to the beginning of the year. Reference exchange rate down 22 VND

The State Bank of Vietnam set the daily reference exchange rate at 23,145 VND/USD on October 21, down 22 VND from the previous day.

With the current trading band of +/-3 percent, the ceiling rate applicable to commercial banks during the day is 23,839 VND/USD and the floor rate 22,450 VND/USD.

A webinar on the implementation of the ASEAN Roadmap on the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour by 2025 was held on October 18-19, attracting the participation of high-ranking officials from ASEAN member countries, and representatives of eight ASEAN’s sectoral bodies.

In his opening remarks, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Ekkapbhab Phantavong asked ASEAN's sectoral agencies to strengthen cooperation in implementing the roadmap.

Association helps to promote Vietnam-DPRK relations

The friendship between Vietnam and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has developed continuously since the two countries established diplomatic ties more than seven decades ago, heard a meeting in Hanoi on October 22.

The Vietnam-DPRK Friendship Association, part of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO), convened its congress for the 2021-2026 in both online and in-person forms.

Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, VUFO President, lauded diverse activities carried out by the association, saying it has closely and effectively coordinated with the DPRK Embassy in Hanoi to hold a range of events, helping to tighten the friendship.

Techcombank profits soar nearly 60 pct

Vietnam’s top private lender, Techcombank, reported a 59.6 percent rise in pre-tax profits for the first nine months of 2021 to VND17.1 trillion ($737.1 million). -

Loans outstanding were up nearly 16 percent for the year at VND321 trillion.

In the third quarter alone, pre-tax profit climbed by 40 percent year-on-year to VND5.56 trillion, mostly from interest income, service fees and securities investment.

Vietnam, RoK share experience in safe tourism recovery post COVID-19

Vietnam and the Republic of Korea (RoK) exchanged experience in ensuring safety for tourists amid COVID-19, as well as tourism recovery and development after the pandemic at a seminar held virtually on October 22.

The event was jointly held by the Institute for Tourism Development Research at the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism and the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute.

Vietnam will welcome international tourists to Phu Quoc island off the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang in November on a trial basis. The model will be rolled out on a larger scale in other destinations like Ha Long Bay (Quang Ninh), Hoi An (Quang Nam), Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa), and Da Lat (Lam Dong), towards fully reopening when conditions permit./.

UNDP debuts climate change news portal for Vietnamese youth

NDO/VNA - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Vietnam launched a news portal on climate change for young people at a discussion held virtually on October 22.

Organised in collaboration with the Italian and British embassies in Vietnam, the event took place on the threshold of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) and gathered more than 2,400 Vietnamese youths from different regions.

The portal provides a learning space for young people to access reliable, accurate and contextual information in Vietnam on climate science, agriculture and forestry, energy, waste, circular economy and climate policy. It reshapes and updates climate science and policy into youth-friendly learning themes.

4th meeting of the Japan-Philippines Maritime Dialogue held

NDO/VNA - The fourth meeting of the Japan-Philippines Maritime Dialogue was held on October 22, in a teleconference format.

According to the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japanese and Philippine officials discussed latest developments in their surrounding seas such as the East Sea/South China Sea and the East China Sea, as well as ways to strengthen cooperation in the Sulu-Celebes Seas and the surrounding areas.

The first meeting of the Japan-Philippines Maritime Dialogue was held in Tokyo on September 9, 2011, followed by the second in Manila on February 22, 2013, and the third in Tokyo on June 11, 2019.

Vietnam to complete fishery management institutions in Q4

NDO/VNA – The Directorate of Fisheries (DoF) is striving to complete institutions for sustainable and responsible fishery management in the fourth quarter of 2021, and quickly address the European Commission (EC)’s recommendations related to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The information was unveiled by DoF Deputy General Director Nguyen Quang Hung on the sidelines of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Develop’s online conference with coastal localities on October 22.

Administrative sanctions against violations related to IUU fishing have led to positive changes in some localities. However, the sanctions are not really strict and inconsistent among localities, and the rate of penalties imposed on violations in foreign waters are still low compared to the reality.

Algerian Ambassador honoured with friendship insignia

At a ceremony held in Hanoi on October 21, President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga said the Vietnam-Algeria friendship and cooperation have flourished during Berrah’s six-year term.

Banking sector promises sufficient funding for businesses post-pandemic

The banking sector will provide enough credit to businesses at supportive interest rates this quarter to help revive them, according to the State Bank of Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City branch.

Nguyen Hoang Minh, its deputy director, said the COVID-19 pandemic had adversely affected the city’s socio-economy, but his office has enhanced measures to mitigate the difficulties faced by businesses in line with the direction of the central bank and the city People’s Committee.

The preferential loans will be available until the end of this year or the package is exhausted, whichever is earlier./.
