Sea level rise – challenge to international peace, security: ambassador

Vietnam shares difficulties facing small island developing states, coastal countries and those located below the sea level that are grappling with adverse impacts of the phenomenon, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN said on October 18.

Speaking at an Arria-formula meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on sea-level rise and implications for international peace and security, Quy said out of the people hardest hit by sea level rise globally, more than 70 percent live in Asia.

Quy affirmed Vietnam’s commitments to promoting the UNSC’s contributions to international efforts in responding to sea level rise./.

Motorbike sales slash nearly 46 per cent in Q3

HÀ NỘI — The Vietnam Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (VAMM) has said its members sold 367,037 motorbikes in the third quarter of 2021, a year-on-year drop of 45.84 per cent.

The VAMM members, namely Honda, Piaggio, Suzuki, SYM, and Yamaha, are manufacturing and distributing about 100 models of motorcycles with prices ranging from more than VNĐ10 million to over VNĐ1 billion each.

Experts predicted that the motorcycle market will recover in the fourth quarter of 2021 - when the peak shopping demand of the year begins, and the COVID-19 pandemic is gradually under control. — VNS

Singapore expands travel corridor to eight more countries

Transport ministry mulls letting the unvaccinated fly

As proposed by the Ministry of Transport, unvaccinated people can fly if they test negative for the coronavirus while the fully-jabbed, from low-risk areas, simply board their flights. -

In a proposal submitted to the government, the ministry said passengers from very high- and high-risk areas, including Ho Chi Minh City, would have to show a negative test result before boarding a flight.

He suggested more flights be added in the coming time following market demand and that the rule of keeping a safe distance on flights be eliminated to reduce airfares.

Thirty-two localities declare COVID-19 risk levels

Thirty-two cities and provinces across the country have declared their COVID-19 risk levels by October 18, following the Government’s new guidelines on safe adaption to the pandemic outlined in Resolution 128/NQ-CP.

The guidelines set out three indicators to assess the level of pandemic risk – the number of new community infections, the coverage of vaccinations, and the ability to receive and treat patients at all levels.

Interprovincial and intra-provincial transportation of goods are allowed to operate at all four levels, with strict adherence to pandemic prevention and control measures./.

VN-Index slips in narrow band

Vietnam’s benchmark VN-Index fell 0.01 percent to 1,395.33 points Tuesday, continuing along a narrow band near the 1,400-range resistance. -

Last-minute selling pressure pulled the index down by 0.2 point. It has been fluctuation within a three-point margin for the past six sessions, after surging to the 1,390-range on Oct. 11.

Offshore wind power needs more support to benefit Việt Nam

HÀ NỘI — While experts say offshore wind power could be a good choice for Việt Nam to replace coal power, they are urging an extension of the feed-in tariff (FiT) programme.

Mark Hutchinson, chairman of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC)’s Southeast Asia Working Group, told local media that coal power plants around the world were being re-evaluated in terms of efficiency and cost, adding most countries in the world and financial institutions have announced a halt to investing in coal power.

Bac Giang works to raise values of livestock products

The northern province of Bac Giang will restructure its animal husbandry to raise values of local products, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Ba Thanh has said.

In the remaining months of 2021 and the next year, local authorities will instruct districts and Bac Giang city to continue reducing small scale and dispersed farming, and at the same time bolstering biosafety models and high technology application.

Meanwhile, it will raise its livestock and poultry population from 26.46 million heads in 2025 to 35.64 million in 2030. The output of meat will then increase from nearly 260,000 tonnes in 2025 to 302,000 tonnes in 2030, while the number of eggs will grow from 250 million in 2025 to 300 million in 2030./.

Vietnamese firms yet to benefit from world coal price fever

HÀ NỘI — Although global coal prices have reached a record high, Vietnamese coal mining enterprises have still failed to increase revenue and profit, and some of them have even suffered losses.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the world average coal price has reached the highest level in history with a year-on-year hike of 110 per cent in the past nine months of 2021 and surging 75 per cent compared to the beginning of the year, though the nine-month global coal demand only increased 4.5 per cent year-on-year, after falling 5 per cent in 2020.

According to the Oil, Gas and Coal Department under the MoIT, the country's energy import trend would continue to increase in the long term and energy import dependency ratio would be around 33-37 per cent by 2025 and up to 50-58 per cent by 2035. — VNS

Enterprises urged to strictly follow standards of imported markets: SPS Vietnam

The Vietnam Sanitary and Phytosanitary Notification Authority and Enquiry Point (SPS Vietnam) has advised enterprises to strictly comply with the rules of import markets, in order to prevent their products from being recalled and their reputations from being affected.

SPS Vietnam said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has received two dispatches from the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) which said shipments to the European Union were found to contain excess levels of agrochemicals. Specifically, importer Vinamex Group found tricyclazone residue at a level higher than the permitted level of the EU in a batch of Queen's brand ST12 premium fragrant rice exported to Belgium. Vinamex Group has posted a recall notice and asked customers not to consume this batch of products and return it for a refund.

According to the MOIT, relevant authorities at EU border gates have been notified and will enhance quarantine measures for imported goods from Vietnam./.

ASEAN Economic Community Council convenes 20th meeting

NDO/VNA – The 20th ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Council Meeting took place virtually on October 18 in preparation for the upcoming 38th and 39th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits slated for October 26 – 28.

At the event, the council discussed a mid-term review of the AEC Blueprint 2025. Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade acts as the agency holding the responsible for the implementation of the blueprint.

Based on the results of the discussion, the conference approved a number of documents to be presented at the 38th and 39th ASEAN Summits, such as the Bandar Seri Begawan Roadmap on ASEAN digital transformation to accelerate the bloc's economic recovery and digital economy integration; an AEC circular economy development framework; and an ASEAN cooperation framework towards consolidating policies on micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises.

However, hopes for this top-performing Asian economy are growing as the Vietnam market has outperformed other international peers thanks to its GDP growth amid COVID-19 last year, according to the Bangkok Post.

The pandemic has indeed dampened the high growth seen in early 2021 and the GDP growth for the first nine months is less than the market forecast at 1.4 percent. Nevertheless, Maetha Peeravud, Assistant Vice President – Fund Management Group, BBL Asset Management, believed Vietnam’s economy has passed the lowest point.

State-owned companies accumulate $505 mln losses

Due to difficulties caused by COVID-19, the return on asset (ROA) of foreign enterprises inched down by 0.1 per cent from 2020 to 12.4 per cent this year, while that of the private economic sector saw a year-on-year decline of 0.4 per cent to 9.4 per cent.

Binh Duong draws FDI after entering new normal

HCM City to resume waterway transport

HCM CITY — The HCM City Department of Transport has proposed reopening a high-speed boat and water-bus route that connects the city with Bà Rịa- Vũng Tàu, Bình Duơng and Tiền Giang provinces from October 20.

The HCM City public river bus route No.1 between Bạch Đằng Wharf in District 1 and Linh Đông Wharf in Thủ Đức City has restarted after more than four months of suspension due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The bus service companies must arrange accommodations for their staff at the departure site and destination in the city and other provinces.

HCMC authorities seen waffling on plans to vaccinate kids against Covid

There are no plans yet to vaccinate children against Covid-19, deputy head of the Ho Chi Minh City Steering Committee on Covid-19 Prevention and Control, Pham Duc Hai, said Monday. -

The Department of Health had earlier said the vaccination would begin on October 22 based on the Ministry of Health's guidelines to immunize children aged 12-17.

The city plans to reopen schools in January next year.

Cambodia shortens quarantine period to attract foreign visitors

Vietnam welcomes Central African Government’s unilateral ceasefire

Ho Chi Minh City has yet to conduct COVID-19 vaccination for children

NDO – Ho Chi Minh City has yet to determine a plan to vaccinate children against COVID-19, said Deputy Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Steering Committee for COVID-19 prevention and control Pham Duc Hai during a meeting on the COVID-19 situation on October 18.

Hai said that the Ministry of Health issued a document on vaccination against COVID-19 for children aged 12-17 on October 14 and the city’s Department of Health submitted a report to the municipal People’s Committee on the preparation for vaccination for children in accordance with the guidance of the Health Ministry.

In addition, the city has detailed a roadmap to conclude the operation of field hospitals for COVID-19 treatment. The city is scheduled to stop the operation of five field hospitals by October 31, an additional five by November 30, and a further five by December 31.
