NDO/VNA – Laos has completely locked down four central districts in its capital city of Vientiane in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19, while Malaysia has planned to offer booster shots of COVID-19 vaccines to frontline forces and the elderly to increase their immunity.

The Lao Ministry of Health on September 19 confirmed 371 new infections in the past 24 hours, including 303 found in the community. The number of cases in Vientiane accounted for the lion’s share of the daily caseload, at 225.

Also on September 18, 15,549 new cases brought the country’s tally to 2,082,876 cases. A total of 324 new fatalities were recorded, raising the country's death toll to 23,067.

Steel exports surge 127 pct

Steel exports increased by 43.4 percent year-on-year in the first eight months to 8.54 million tons, and were worth US$7.1 billion, a 127 percent rise. -

Vice President presents pandemic prevention gifts to An Giang

Third HCMC wholesale market to reopen Monday

Vietnam to spend $113 mln buying 20 million Pfizer doses

Sinopharm vaccine accounts for nearly half of vaccines available in Vietnam thus far.

The Ministry of Health has decided to allocate eight million doses of Vero Cell/Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine to 25 cities and provinces. Of them, Hanoi is the biggest recipient with 1.36 million.

From Sept. 21 onward, Hanoi will allow constructions sites, except for those in the “red zone” (very high-risk area), and stop those with any infection.

HAVANA — President Nguyễn Xuân Phúc and a high-ranking delegation from Việt Nam arrived in Havana on September 18 morning (local time), beginning a three-day official visit to Cuba at the invitation of First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (CPC) Central Committee and President of Cuba Miguel Díaz Canel.

Binh Thuan approves whale-worshipping festival conservation project

In a bit to preserve and promote the unique traditional culture of fishermen while boosting local tourism and contributing to socio-economic development, the People’s Committee of the south-central province of Binh Thuan has approved a project on the conservation of the Cau Ngu (whale-worshipping) Festival at Van Thuy Tu Temple in Duc Thang ward, Phan Thiet city.

From 2022 onwards, the annual Cau Ngu Festival will take place during the 6th lunar month and the Phan Thiet City People’s Committee will be in charge of its organisation.

In 2019, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued a Decision approving the Cau Ngu Festival as a national intangible heritage./.

Bitter fruit: farmers suffer huge loses as produce prices plunge

Farmers in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam’s agricultural production hub, are hurting as produce prices plunge by almost 80 percent in the wake of pandemic provoked distribution challenges. -

Son Van Luan, 67, director of a cooperative in Vinh Long Province’s Binh Tan district said farmers were suffering huge losses because sweet potato prices have dropped steeply.

According to the Institute for Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development, agricultural production value in the Mekong Delta accounts for about 40 percent of the national total. The region's rice production accounts for 50 percent of the national total, aquatic production for 65 percent and fruit production for 70 percent.

The data available for review is from the developers – Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology JSC in Ho Chi Minh City with the support in administration and medical monitoring from the Military Medical University in Hanoi – up until September 2 this year, as the final phase of clinical trials is ongoing for the recombinant DNA vaccine.

Under the latest guidelines from the health ministry, domestically developed COVID-19 vaccines could be authorised for emergency use if they prove to be safe and effective in mid-term phase 3 findings, with further monitoring required even after obtaining such approval./.

France and Russia plan talks to take fizz out of champagne dispute

France and Russia have agreed to talks to resolve a dispute over a new Russian law that forces French champagne makers to label their bottles as sparkling wine, the French agriculture ministry said on Saturday.

Since July, all foreign suppliers to Russia must use the description "sparkling wine" on the back of bottles. Only local producers can use the label "shampanskoye" -- the Russian equivalent of champagne.

The move comes days after French champagne producers, who make sparkling wine from grapes in the Champagne region of northeast France and whose label is protected in many countries, decided to resume exports to Russia.

Vietnam calls on parties in Somalia to solve differences

NDO/VNA – Vietnam has called on parties involved in Somalia to settle differences and put national interests first to solve the ongoing political crisis, said Ambassador Pham Hai Anh, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations.

Speaking at a United Nations Security Council meeting on Somalia’s situation on September 17, Ambassador Anh stressed that the parties involved in Somalia need to find ways to resolve differences, participate in dialogues and build trust in a constructive spirit and make more efforts to achieve a political consensus in organising elections in accordance with an agreement reached on May 27.

Regarding the Senate election in Somalia, he said that 34 out of 54 seats were elected, of which women accounted for 24 percent. The state of Somaliland is expected to hold a Senate election in the next few days, Swan said, adding that he has called on Somalian leaders not to take any more unilateral actions or statements that could cause a negative impact on electoral timetable and process.
