5,357 new cases of COVID-19 reported on Wednesday

HÀ NỘI — A further 5,343 domestic cases of COVID-19 were reported in Việt Nam on Wednesday, as well as 14 imported cases that were quarantined upon arrival.

There are 123 patients being treated in intensive care. A further 18 are in a critical condition and being treated with ECMO.

The national tally overall of COVID-19 cases has reached 68,177, including 66,078 domestic cases and 2,099 imported cases. — VNS

Government sets up COVID-19 special working group

The Government has decided to establish a special working group to carry out COVID-19 prevention and control tasks.

The working group will be located in Ho Chi Minh City, which is the country’s largest COVID-19 hotspot, and directed by the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control.

The Minister of Health should also provide written instructions on the implementation of shortening the period of quarantine for people entering the country who have received a full dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. They should urgently issue guidelines on the classification of cases F0, F1, F2 for appropriate, scientific, close and effective management measures./.

Economy expected to top ASEAN until next year

NDO - The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which is becoming increasingly complex, is expected to continue creating a grey economic picture in the region. However, Vietnam is still believed to be a leader in regional economic growth, despite some risks remaining.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has just lowered Vietnam's economic growth projection for this year from 6.7% in April 2021 to 5.8% its freshly-released Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2021 Supplement: Renewed Outbreaks and Divergent Recoveries.

However, Dhiraj Nim and Khoon Goh, economists at ANZ, commented "We remain constructive on Vietnam as far as its regional standing goes. Amid a broader resurgence of the pandemic in Asia, Vietnam's growth prospects still look better in a relative sense. After averting contraction in 2020, its expected pace of recovery in 2021 implies that it will be among one of the first economies to narrow, or even close, its negative output gap in the region. In addition, the medium-term prospects are solid, amid expectations of rising exports and foreign direct investment."

Indonesia expands entry restrictions for foreign workers over COVID-19

Indonesian Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly has said foreign workers involved in the national strategic projects starting July 21 are not allowed to enter the country, as the government has expanded restrictions to curb the surge in COVID-19 cases.

Foreign workers who previously came as part of a national strategic project, or for reasons of family union, can no longer enter Indonesia, Laoly noted.

As of July 21, the country had recorded 2,983,830 cases, including 2,356,553 recoveries and 77,583 deaths./.

Reduced insurance premiums for 11.2 million workers

HÀ NỘI — More than 11.2 million employees, working at 375,000 businesses in the country, have received a reduction in their insurance premiums for occupational accidents and diseases, worth about VNĐ4.3 trillion (US$187.6 million), according to Việt Nam Social Security.

The financial support is part of a support package for people and businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, worth VNĐ26 trillion (US$1.1 billion) issued by the Government.

HCMC-Hanoi flights hit further by Covid threat

HCMC expects to discharge 1,000 Covid-19 patients per day

With the current treatment capacity, about 1,000 Covid-19 patients will be released from hospitals daily, a HCMC health official said. -

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s current Covid-19 epicenter, currently operates 35 Covid-19 hospitals that offer more than 59,000 beds, including 13 field hospitals.

After staying at a hospital for a week, patients would be tested, and if the result is negative or shows a low viral concentration, be sent home two days later. Once at home, all patients would be monitored and must follow health authority guidance and be tested twice more.

Vietnam produces test batch of Sputnik V vaccine

VABIOTECH, one of Vietnam’s leading pharmaceutical companies, and the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) on July 21 announced the production of a test batch of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine against the coronavirus in Vietnam.

According to VABIOTECH, the made-in-Vietnam Sputnik V vaccine will be used in the national immunisation programme after the technology transfer is completed and it goes through quality control by Gamaleya Center, the Russian research institute that develops the Sputnik V vaccine.

To date, Sputnik V has been registered in 68 countries with a total population of over 3.7 billion, which is nearly half of the global population. The data obtained by regulators of a number of countries during the vaccination of people in Mexico, Argentina, Serbia, Bahrain, Hungary, the UAE, and others, demonstrates that Sputnik V is one of the safest and most effective vaccines against the coronavirus.

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam welcomes and is grateful for the timely and practical assistance from countries, partners, and international organisations to Việt Nam with regards to COVID-19, foreign ministry spokesperson Lê Thị Thu Hằng said on Thursday.

The spokesperson also confirmed that a further three million doses of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine donated by the US Government would be delivered to Việt Nam via the global vaccine sharing initiative COVAX on Sunday, bringing the total assistance to five million doses after the first shipment of two million doses of Moderna arrived on July 10.

By the end of Wednesday, 4,042,984 doses of COVID-19 vaccine, mainly AstraZeneca, have been administered in Việt Nam, with 324,955 people having received the full two doses. — VNS

Ministry wants HCMC wholesale markets reopened

VGP - The Ministry of Health confirmed two imported cases and 2,965 domestic infection cases of COVID-19 on Thursday morning, raising the national caseload to 71,144.

The domestic cases are residents in 18 localities including HCMC (2,433), Long An (233), Binh Duong (64), Dong Nai (53), Tien Giang (41), Vinh Long (38), Ben Tre (28), Da Nang (27), An Giang (15), Kien Giang (10), Hau Giang (5), Binh Phuoc (5), Hai Phong (3), Can Tho (3), Ha Noi (2), Son La (2), Quang Binh (2) and Thua-Thien Hue (1). Of these, 2,784 were uncovered at quarantine camps or lockdown areas.

Tropical depression located about 110km from Mong Cai City

NDO - At 7am on July 22, the centre of a tropical depression was located on the mainland south of Guangxi Province (China), about 110km east-northeast of Mong Cai City in Quang Ninh Province, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).

At 7am on July 23, its location is forecast to be about 21.3 degrees north latitude and 108.4 degrees east longitude, on the north sea of the Gulf of Tonkin, about 60km southeast of Mong Cai City. The strongest winds near its centre will be 40-50 km/hour, with gusts of level 8.

The waters from Binh Thuan to Ca Mau, and from Ca Mau to Kien Giang will suffer from showers and thunderstorms, with the possibility of tornadoes and strong gusts.

Urbanisation ratio reaches 40.4 percent

Vietnam’s urbanisation ratio reached about 40.4 percent as of the end of June, with a total of 867 urban areas, according to the Ministry of Construction.

Compared to the end of 2020, the ratio rose about 0.4 percent, with the establishment of five new urban areas, the ministry reported.

BOT toll collections suspended in southern region

HCM CITY — HCM City has suspended toll collections at BOT (build-operate-transfer) toll stations to support the fight against the latest COVID-19 outbreak.

Vietnam confirms 2,965 new local Covid cases

The Ministry of Health announced 2,965 more Covid-19 community transmissions Thursday morning, raising the ongoing coronavirus wave's tally to 67,422. -

Of the new patients, 2,433 were recorded in Ho Chi Minh City while its two neighbors Long An and Binh Duong got 233 and 64, respectively.

It has vaccinated more than 4.36 million, or 4.5 percent of the population, against the new coronavirus, but only 324,955 have received two doses.

Vietnamese weightlifters set the bar for Olympic medals

Weightlifting is Vietnam's biggest Olympic hope this year, with Thach Kim Tuan and Hoang Thi Duyen going all out for medals. -

In the past, Vietnamese weightlifting won one silver medal at 2008 Beijing Olympics and one bronze at London 2012, both in the men's 56 kg category. Tuan had started his career in this weight class. But when the International World Federation removed this class and replaced it with 55 kilograms, Tuan decided to move up to the 61 kg segment.

Vietnam makes first batch of Russian Covid-19 vaccine

The first test batch of Russian-developed Sputnik V vaccine against Covid-19 has been produced in Vietnam, according to an announcement Wednesday. -

The first validation samples taken from the produced batch will be shipped to the Gamaleya Center in Russia for quality control checks, the fund and the company said in a joint statement, Russia’s sovereign wealth fund RDIF and Vietnamese pharmaceutical firm Vabiotech said in a joint statement.

Russia says the efficacy of the vaccine is 97.6 percent.

Russia sells arms worth over EUR1 bln at aerospace show

The Russian state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport announced on Thursday it has signed contracts worth over EUR1billion (US$1.18 billion) during the ongoing MAKS aerospace show.

Rosoboronexport signed 13 deals on the sidelines of the MAKS-2021 for the supply of Russian military products, including Su-30SME aircraft, Mi-35M and Mi-17V5 helicopters, modern aerial weapons and armored vehicles, said the company's Director General Alexander Mikheev.

During the aerospace show, Russia unveiled a prototype of its fifth-generation lightweight single-engine fighter jet "Checkmate," which mainly targets foreign buyers.

In addition, many localities are entering the harvest season of various agricultural products with abundant output, which will be an essential source of supply to meet local demand and also to sell to other provinces and cities across the country as well as for export.

After suspending the operation of all traditional markets to prevent the spread of the pandemic, the Department of Industry and Trade of Can Tho city has “brought the market to the street” and arranged stores with stabilised prices at five locations in Phong Dien, Binh Thuy and Ninh Kieu districts. The storage area is spacious and airy, ensuring safe conditions for pandemic prevention and control while both buyers and sellers strictly adhere to 5K regulations.

Meanwhile, by the end of July, Can Tho will have harvested more than 439,000 tonnes or rice, over 7,500 tonnes of vegetables, 455 tonnes of corn, about 59 tonnes of beans and more than 10,000 tonnes of fruits.
