A Vietnamese delegation led by Colonel Pham Manh Thang, Deputy Director of the Defence Ministry’s Foreign Relations Department, attended a conference of the ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting Plus Working Group (ADSOM+ WG) held via video conference on June 11.

The meeting, the third of its kind this year, was presided over by Deputy Permanent Secretary of Policy and Strategy at the Brunei Defence Ministry Haji Adi Ihram Bin Dato Paduka Haji Mahmud.

Delegates discussed and agreed on a draft of the Joint Statement, agenda and working programme of the 8th ADMM+, which is scheduled to take place virtually on June 16./.

Vietnam adds 81 to local Covid tally

The Health Ministry confirmed another 81 Covid-19 patients Friday noon, sending the domestic count of Vietnam's fourth wave to 6,718 in over six weeks. -

The new cases were recorded in HCMC, Hanoi, Bac Giang and Bac Ninh provinces in the north, and central Ha Tinh Province.

Bac Giang continues to have the highest infections, at 3,764, followed by its neighbor Bac Ninh with 1,240 cases and HCMC with 590.

Vietnam’s protective equipment production rises six-fold

Vietnam’s production of personal protective equipment (PPE) rose six-fold last year, according to the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC).

The IFC said on June 9 that it is helping developing countries, including Vietnam, with PPE production, with an aim to provide front-line medical staff with quality and trustworthy products and curb COVID-19 spread.

The corporation added that the global demand for PPE such as medical masks, gloves, glasses, protective shoes, protective suits and respirators soared 3-4 fold during 2019-2020, which is expected to keep rising by 6-9 percent annually till at least 2025./.

HCMC detects four new Covid clusters with unidentified transmission sources

Vegetable and fruit exports hit $1.77 billion during Jan-May

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s export turnover of fruits and vegetables hit US$1.77 billion in the first five months of this year, a year-on-year increase of 18 per cent, reported the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

In May alone, fruit and vegetable exports raked in $400 million, a surge of 48.3 per cent compared to the same period last year.

To boost the export of fruits and vegetables, the ministry assigned the Director of the Plant Protection Department to negotiate to open 19 markets for 20 types of products, assist in handling, negotiating and removing technical difficulties arising in the export process, co-ordinate with localities to build codes for growing areas and export establishments to ensure traceability and meet requirements of major importers. — VNS

Artists help sell agricultural products

HÀ NỘI — Tonnes of agricultural products like lychee, plum and wax gourd were sold out within an hour by actor Nguyễn Xuân Bắc via a programme livestreamed on the Beatvn Facebook page on Tuesday.

The number of synthetic drug users in Vietnam has jumped six-fold since 2017, the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime has said in a report. -

‘Synthetic Drugs in East and Southeast Asia: latest developments and challenges 2021’, released Thursday, estimated the figure at nearly 190,000 last year.

"The drop in the price of methamphetamine in Southeast Asia is a serious problem, clearly showing supply reduction strategies have not worked as intended," Inshik Sim, UNODC regional coordinator, said.

Vietnamese universities enter top 1000 of QS global rankings

This marks the fourth consecutive year the two Vietnam's national universities have made it into the top 1,000.

The Vietnam National University in Hanoi and its sister institution in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) have entered the 801 to 1000 band of the 2022 rankings compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British firm specializing in overseas education, and released on June 9.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, more commonly known globally as MIT, topped the 2022 QS University World Rankings, followed by Stanford and Harvard, all of which are US institutions.

NDO/VNA – The Hue Monuments Conservation Centre has completed the compilation of a dossier for the national treasure of “Cuu dinh” (Nine Dynastic Urns) to seek recognition as a world documentary heritage, said Dr Le Thi An Hoa from the centre.

The dossiers will be submitted to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for consideration and recommendations before seeking UNESCO’s recognition.

Vietnam Airlines cleared for 12 repatriation flights from US

National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines has received permission from U.S. authorities to conduct 12 repatriation flights this year, the first of which is scheduled for this month. -

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang affirmed Friday that Taiwan’s drills in waters off Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands are a violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty and should not be repeated. -

"The fact that Taiwan performs live fire drills in sea areas around Truong Sa Archipelago’s Ba Binh (Itu Aba) Island is a serious violation of Vietnam’s territorial sovereignty over this islands, threatening peace, stability, safety and maritime security by escalating and complicating the East Sea situation," Hang said in a Friday press release.

Taiwan illegally occupies the Ba Binh Island, which is the largest natural area on the Spratly Archipelago. In 2000, Taiwan deployed a unit of Coast Guard in Ba Binh, replacing a marine unit. The new one is equipped with different kinds of arms such as machine guns and long-range mortars. Consequently, the territory regularly conducts illegal live-fire drills on the island.

Two cancer patients with Covid-19 die in Hanoi

Two women struggling with cancer have become Vietnam's 56th and 57th coronavirus fatalities, the Health Ministry announced Friday. -

One of them is 65 years old and from the northern Ninh Binh Province. She had cervical cancer and had gone through chemo and radiation therapies six different times.

Home-grown Nano Covax vaccine enters third-phase trial

The third-phase clinical trial of Vietnam’s first home-grown COVID-19 vaccine, Nano Covax, began on June 10. Being developed by the Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology JSC based on recombinant DNA/protein technology, the vaccine has undergone two trial phases and proved to be effective against the UK and South African variants.

More than 6,000 volunteers have registered for the third phase of the human trials of Nano Covax. The vaccine will be tested on around 13,000 volunteers aged between 18 and 74 in many localities nationwide.

Results from the previous two trials show that Nano Covax is completely safe. All of the vaccinated volunteers developed antibodies against the UK and South African variants. However, more studies on phase three are needed to clarify how effective it is against the Indian variant, which is wreaking havoc across northern localities in Vietnam now./.

63 more COVID-19 cases added to national tally

NDO/VNA – Vietnam posted another 63 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases in the past six hours to 6pm on June 11, pushing the national count to 9,980, according to the Ministry of Health.

Of the domestic cases, 27 were found in Bac Giang, 20 in Ho Chi Minh City, 15 in Bac Ninh, and one in Hanoi. Fifty-six of them were detected in quarantine or blocked sites.

Food, medical supplies presented to border forces in Lao province

NDO/VNA - The Border Guard Command of central Quang Nam province presented food and medical supplies to border protection forces in Sekong province of Laos to help them fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Six tonnes of rice and other food, together with medical supplies such as body thermometers, disinfectant sprayers, antiseptic liquid, and medical gloves, were handed over to the Lao side at Nam Giang International Border Gate on June 10.

Colonel Nguyen Ba Thong, Commander of the Quang Nam Border Guard Command, said more donations of food and medical supplies will be delivered to border forces in Sekong province.
