MAY 14: Vietnam’s Covid-19 cases hit 788 after two weeks

Vietnam is warned of surging infections in industrial parks if no drastic measures are taken.

Vietnam has now confirmed 788 Covid-19 cases of local transmission dating from April 29 when its fourth outbreak began, including 104 infections on May 14.

The number of people under quarantine reached 83,415, including 1,433 at hospitals, 34,252 at state-run quarantine centers, and the remaining at home and lodging facilities.

Vietnam records 20 new COVID-19 cases on May 15 morning

As many as 20 new COVID-19 cases were recorded over the last 12 hours to 6:00am on May 15, all of them in quarantine facillities, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

The MoH’s Department of Medical Examination Management reported that 2,657 patients have been given the all-clear. The death toll remains at 35.

The Ministry said an additional 10,515 people were administered COVID-19 vaccine nationwide on May 14, raising the total number of vaccinated people to 969,697./.

The director of a Hanoi state-owned construction firm was dismissed Saturday for failing to isolate himself after visiting Covid-hit areas. -

The Ministry of Health announced 18 new COVID-19 infections over the past six hours to 12:00pm on May 15, including two imported cases and 16 in quarantine facilities.

The two imported are Vietnamese citizens returning from Malaysia and Japan and being quarantined in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province and Da Nang city, respectively.

The MoH’s Department of Medical Examination Management reported that 2,658 patients have been given the all-clear. The death toll remains at 35.

Vietnam logged 20 new domestic Covid-19 cases Saturday morning, raising the infection tally in its fourth coronavirus wave to 808. -

The new patients were recorded in northern provinces of Bac Giang, Lang Son, Vinh Phuc, Hanoi and in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak, all related to previously confirmed patients and outbreaks.

Vietnamese abroad send more than $17 billion home in remittances in 2020

HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese abroad sent home US$17.2 billion worth of remittances in 2020, making Việt Nam the third-largest remittance recipient in the East Asia and Pacific region, according to the Migration and Development Brief released early this week by the World Bank and the Global Knowledge Partnership on Migration and Development (KNOMAD).

This represented a rise of nearly 3 per cent over 2019, a very positive result compared to the previous forecast in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recently, the World Bank had estimated that remittance flow to Việt Nam in the first 10 months of 2020 fell by 7 per cent.

The global average cost of sending $200 remained high at 6.5 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2020, more than double the Sustainable Development Goal target of 3 per cent. — VNS

US firm proposes two LNG projects in Vân Phong EZ

KHÁNH HÒA — Authorities of the south-central coastal province of Khánh Hòa are seeking Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s backing for two major projects with a total investment of more than US$27 billion proposed by the Millennium Energy Corp of the US in Vân Phong Economic Zone (EZ).

The projects aim to build a power plant fuelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and an LNG depot in the southern part of the Vân Phong EZ.

Property inventory falls to 3,300 apartments in Q1

HÀ NỘI — The country’s apartment inventory was estimated at some 3,300 units by the end of the first quarter of the year, falling 5,700 units compared to the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Construction (MoC).

This shows that the absorption capacity of the real estate market in the first quarter of 2021 was better than the same period in 2020 and the previous quarter, the ministry added.

NDO – The Government has allowed foreign traders to enter Vietnam to buy lychees in the northern province of Bac Giang, according to a recent document of the Government Office dated May 14.

In the document, the Government asked the working groups of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Defence, and Ministry of Transport to process Bac Giang provincial authorities’ submission of granting visa and flight permits (if any) to foreign merchants in compliance with COVID-19 prevention measures.

In 2021, Bac Giang Province has 28,100 hectares for lychee cultivation and is expected to harvest around 1880,000 tonnes of lychees this season. The harvesting time is scheduled from May 10 until July 2021.

Russian COVID-19 vaccine rollout starts in India

India's Dr Reddy's Laboratories has launched the Russia's Sputnik COVID-19 vaccine on Friday by administering the first dose to a patient in the South Eastern city of Hyderabad, according to a corporate filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange.

The vaccine is priced at US$12.9 plus 5 percent tax and the first consignment of imported doses of Sputnik V vaccine was received by the Indian company on May 1 and the drug regulator's clearance was received on Thursday.

In the coming months, more consignments of vaccines would be imported till the Sputnik vaccine is locally manufactured in India as the company is working closely with its six manufacturing partners in India to fulfil regulatory requirements and ensure smooth and timely supply, the statement said.

Renewable energy output up nearly 160 per cent in Q1

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam's total output of electricity from renewable sources hit 9.5 billion kWh in the first four months of 2021, up 156.9 per cent year-on-year, and accounting for 11.8 per cent of the total electricity output, according to a report by Vietnam Electricity (EVN).

The electricity output from solar energy alone reached 8.73 billion kWh, an almost three-fold increase compared to the same period last year.

Police in the northern province of Hai Duong are considering opening criminal investigation into a coronavirus patient for spreading the disease after entering the country illegally. -

Dao Duy Tung, 32, illegally traveled to Laos in March to look for a job, then illegally traveled back to Vietnam on April 22. He was later confirmed infected with the coronavirus on May 6.

Everyone entering Vietnam from abroad is quarantined for 14 days and tested at least twice. Illegal entrants are those evading official border checkpoints to avoid quarantine.

TRÀ VINH – The Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Trà Vinh has stepped up support for farmers adopting advanced techniques to improve product value and income.

Phạm Minh Truyền, director of its Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said advanced farming techniques are used on more than 17,400ha of rice, vegetables, fruits, and aquaculture.

Vietnam records 20 new COVID-19 cases on May 15 morning

NDO/VNA – As many as 20 new COVID-19 cases were recorded over the last 12 hours to 6:00am on May 15, all of them in quarantine facillities, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

The MoH’s Department of Medical Examination Management reported that 2,657 patients have been given the all-clear. The death toll remains at 35.

The Ministry said an additional 10,515 people were administered COVID-19 vaccine nationwide on May 14, raising the total number of vaccinated people to 969,697.

HCM CITY Rap Việt All-Star 2021, a concert that featured dozens of rappers from the Vietnamese underground music scene, will be broadcast on the streaming platform VieON at 8pm on May 21.

The four-hour concert featured 30 lesser-known as well as famous rappers, and 500 dancers who on April 10 performed in front of 10,000 people at the Sài Gòn Exhibition and Convention Center in HCM City’s District 7.

Vietnam records 60 more Covid-19 cases

The Ministry of Health confirmed 60 new Covid-19 patients Friday evening, including 59 local cases and an imported one. -

Among the new community transmissions, Bac Ninh has 33, Hanoi has 12, Bac Giang 6, Da Nang 3, Thai Binh and Dien Bien with one each. All cases were contained within the quarantine zones.

Over 959,000 have been vaccinated against Covid-19 so far
