One more high-speed patrol vessel built with Indian assistance launched

The Ministry of National Defense Monday launched one high-speed patrol boat built with India technical and financial assistance and held the keel-laying ceremony for another. -

Using a $100-million line of credit extended to Vietnam in October 2014 by India, five vessels are being built at the Larsen & Toubro shipyard in Chennai, India, and seven at the Hong Ha Shipyard in Hai Phong under the company’s supervision.

In December last year India handed over the first of the 12 vessels to Vietnam.

Samsung Vietnam to recruit hundreds of engineers

Samsung Vietnam on April 12 officially announced the recruitment of engineers, including bachelors in all majors from universities and institutes throughout the country in 2021 with a deadline of submission on 16 May, 2021. The recruiment aimed to expand its research and development (R&D;) and production activities.

This is an annual activity that has been organised by Samsung Vietnam twice a year since 2011. Even in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic was severe, it continued without stopping. The recruitment process is conducted strictly with many rounds of competition including profile qualifying round, GSAT round and interview round.

Candidates who pass the recruitment rounds will work at six Samsung factories, R&D; centre and branches in Vietnam, including: Samsung Electronics Vietnam (SEV), Samsung Electronics Vietnam Thai Nguyen (SEVT), Samsung Display Vietnam (SDV), Samsung SDI Vietnam (SDIV), Samsung Vietnam Mobile Research and Development Centre (SVMC) and Samsung SDS Vietnam Company Limited (SDS)./.

Vietnamese family businesses optimism about growth prospects: PwC

The UK-based audit service supplier PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has released its first survey on Vietnamese family businesses, which showed optimism in their future development.

The survey is part of the PwC’s 10th PwC Global Family Business Survey, which unearths the current thinking and future outlook of 2,801 family business leaders across 87 countries and territories, of which 33 were from Vietnam, representing a diverse mix of businesses and industries.

However, the survey findings show that in five years, Vietnamese family businesses will shift towards more external involvement in family businesses. In detail, it will transit from owner/family managed businesses to family-owned/ externally-managed or externally-run businesses (increased to 60 percent from 12 percent)./.

Dragon Capital buys more 1.2 million shares of steel giant Hoà Phát

HÀ NỘI — Hanoi Investments Holdings Limited, run by Dragon Capital, announced it has purchased an additional 1.2 million shares of steel giant Hoà Phát Group (HPG), raising its ownership in HPG from 15.95 million to 17.2 million shares.

This move caused the HPG share volume owned by Dragon Capital's investment funds to increase from 198.7 million to 199.92 million shares.

Exported steel billet was more than 386,000 tonnes, up 27 per cent over the same period last year. Hot-rolled coil (HRC) products reached 665,000 tonnes, up 75 per cent compared to the fourth quarter of 2020. VNS

FLC targets 163 pct profit growth

FLC Group has set a pre-tax profit target of VND1.1 trillion ($48.2 million) for 2021, a 163 percent increase over last year. -

Vietnam targets US$15 billion in forestry exports in 2021

NDO – The wood and forestry industry is fully capable of reaching export revenue of US$15 billion in 2021 thanks to strong growth from the beginning of this year, Permanent Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Ha Cong Tuan has said in an interview granted to Nhan Dan Online.

Deputy Minister Ha Cong Tuan: 2020 concluded with many difficulties, especially for the processing and export of wood and forestry products due to the serious impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the entire economy.

According to the Vietnam Administration of Forestry, the export of wood and forestry products was estimated at US$3.944 billion in the first quarter of 2021, up 41.5% over the same period last year, including US$3.699 billion worth of export revenue of wood and wood products, up 41.5%, and US$243 million worth of other forestry products, up 38.4%. Main export markets of Vietnam are the US, Japan, China, the EU, and the Republic of Korea which account for 90% of Vietnam’s total export revenue of wood and forestry products.

Good control of pandemic will accelerate credit growth: Insiders

Credit growth will expand significantly from Quarter 2 and exceed the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV)’s target of 12 percent for the year as a whole if the pandemic is brought under good control and the vaccination campaign proves effective, according to insiders.

Expecting domestic recovery in its strategic investment report for 2021, the VNDirect Securities Corporation forecast that this year credit growth would top 13 percent and interest rates could fall 20-50 percentage points in the context of loose monetary policy and low inflationary pressure.

According to economist Nguyen Tri Hieu, it is necessary to stimulate credit demand to achieve effective credit growth. However, banks should be able to control their customers’ sources in covering debts to ensure credit growth criteria and the quality of collateral./.

Cambodia vaccinates 1 mln people against COVID-19: health spokeswoman

Cambodia has vaccinated 1 million out of its 16 million population against the COVID-19 so far, Health Ministry's secretary of state and spokeswoman Or Vandine said here on Monday.

Panh Savannarith, a 36-year-old Phnom Penh resident, was the 1,000,000th person to be vaccinated, she said, adding that Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen provided the grant of KHR5 million (US$1,250) to Sovannrith for being the 1,000,000th vaccine recipient.

By the end of March, the kingdom had acquired more than 3.1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines. The country is expected to receive 8 million more doses in phases between April and August, Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said on Saturday, adding that the kingdom is targeting to inoculate at least 10 million of the population.

Vietnamese workers receive one-year extension of stay in RoK

SEOUL — The Republic of Korea (RoK) on Tuesday announced a decision to extend the period of stay for about 115,000 foreign migrant workers, including those from Việt Nam, by one year in a bid to relieve labour shortages at small businesses and in farming and fishing sectors.

The temporary extension of stay will apply to the E-9 non-professional employment and H-2 visiting employment visa holders, whose period of staying and working in the RoK is set to expire between April 13 and December 31.

ASEAN share of US-bound container shipping surpasses 20 pct for first time

Total shipping volume from members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) increased in 2020, pushing its global share above the 20 percent mark for the first time and making its presence felt in the US-bound marine transportation market, reported Nikkei Asia Review.

In contrast, the share of shipping originating in China, which is the highest globally, has decreased for two straight years.

ASEAN's US-bound shipping volume of furniture increased 13.1 percent and 29.4 percent for home electronics from a year earlier. This helped boost the volume departing from Vietnam, which has many furniture and smartphone plants./.

Tardy elevator construction at Tan Son Nhat airport blamed on Covid-19

Construction of two elevators in Tan Son Nhat's parking lot has been delayed until May after the Covid-19 pandemic prevented the import of necessary equipment. -

CAAV proposes installing night lighting at Con Dao Airport

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has sent a document to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) proposing that research be made on the possibility of installing lights at Con Dao Airport in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, to improve operational capacity.

The Con Dao Airport is located on Con Dao Island and investing in lighting for night operations is difficult due to weather and environmental conditions. As the airport is not permitted to operate 24 hours a day, flights only take off and land during the daytime.

Two Vietnamese airlines currently conduct flights to Con Dao - Bamboo Airways and VASCO, an affiliate of Vietnam Airlines. Bamboo Airways conduct flights linking Con Dao with Hanoi, Hai Phong, Vinh in Nghe An province, and Ho Chi Minh City, while VASCO operates HCM City-Con Dao flights./.

The Khmer people in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang will celebrate their traditional New Year festival, Chol Chnam Thmay, from April 14-16.

Most Venerable Lam Suong, head of the Ompuyear Pagoda in Thanh Phu commune, My Xuyen district, said the pagoda has raised public awareness about COVID-19 prevention and control efforts during the festival, as recommended by the health sector and provincial authorities.

As of late 2020, the total number of local poor households was down to just over 8,600, or 2.66 percent. Of these, 4,140 were Khmer people, or 4.13 percent./.

Hòa Phát Group to start construction on container plant in June

HÀ NỘI — Steel maker Hòa Phát Group will start construction of a cargo container plant in June this year in the southern province of Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu.

The municipal Department of Planning and Investment on Monday officially granted the business registration certificate to Hòa Phát Container Manufacturing Joint Stock Company. The group has arranged enough capital to implement the project according to the committed schedule.

Though the shipping container market is growing 5 per cent annually, there has been a shortage of supply. In previous years, China had produced 90 per cent of the world’s containers. The country, however, has cut output by 40 per cent over the last two years, despite growing domestic demand. — VNS

COVID-19: seven imported cases reported in past 12 hours

Seven imported cases of COVID-19 were reported in the past 12 hours to 6pm April 13, raising the national count to 2,714, according to the Health Ministry.

Of the new cases, one is a German citizen arriving from the Philippines, and six are Vietnamese returning from abroad. They have been quarantined immediately after arrival.

The Health Ministry continues to urge all people to follow the 5K motto – Khau trang (wearing facemask) – Khu khuan (disinfecting) – Khoang cach (keeping distance) – Khong tu tap (no gathering) – Khai bao y te (making medical declaration), in order to live safely amid the pandemic./.

With an output of 500,000 TEU a year, the container production will need one million tonnes of HRC a year, which is a very good output for the Hoa Phat Dung Quat Iron and Steel Complex and Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 Project. The container manufacturing is a value-added product in Hoa Phat’s iron and steel manufacturing ecosystem./.
